少女失樂園 + 情婦的情夫 + 魔洞

少女失樂園
An Education - 4.5 / 5

An Education is a bewitching and thought-provoking coming of age story enlivened by Carey Mulligan and a charismatic and capable supporting cast. Carey Mulligan convinces me of her role as a naïve and well behaved teenage girl at the beginning of the film and a young woman who has seen the world in the second half.

The movie delivers a message that some lessons cannot be learnt from textbooks. Instead, by trial and error, we learn from our mistakes and become better selves. Besides, the movie also requires us to ponder on the nature of education. Is learning hard and boring by nature? Is school education important? The movie seems to remind us of the complexity of these questions.

I highly recommend this beautiful and meaningful movie to those who are interested in education, teenage growth, romance, parenting and feminism.

Spoiler Warning: Although some viewers complain about the slightly abrupt and clichéd ending, I am quite satisfied with the ending because the movie is based on a true story and the title fits the ending in which we witness her personal growth and a sense of guilt about her
impetuous past (judging from her tears and the last line).

魔洞 The Descent - 4 / 5

Not only is The Descent a nightmarish horror movie which will surely satisfy the fans of gore, it is also a dehumanizing adventure with some depth, provoking thoughts on feminism, vengeance, guilt and mistrust, despite its low budget. The convincing performances, the growing but pent-up tension caused by the claustrophobic and stifling atmosphere as well as
screeches echoing eerily in the dimly-lit cave will drag you into the darkest hole of terror, with a heroine’s tortured psyche vulnerably exposed. DON'T MISS IT!!! The foreign reviews are surprisingly positive.

情婦的情夫 Broken Embraces - 4 / 5

Broken Embraces is a visually rich, well acted and rather compelling melodrama with some memorable scenes e.g. the shattering lip reading scene. Pedro Almodovar’s signature is on every shot of this thematically familiar movie about desire, love, jealousy, revenge and film making. However, some may find the movie too complex because of the two movies (a comedy and a documentary) within a movie mixing suspense, family and romance and the
present interwoven with the past. Indeed, the story is revealed layer by layer, with the director's masterful techniques. It is not one of the director's best works though.
