Sweeney Todd is a well-adapted, well-acted and engaging musical with a dark tone as well as disturbing visuals. It talks about revenge and regret.

In my opinion, the story itself is fascinating. Johnny Depp was blinded by hatred and revenge, ignoring others around him. Helena was blinded by love, the little boy by loyalty and the judge by desire. All these lead to a disastrous tragedy. Besides, I was touched by the boy’s remarks and Helena’s love for Johnny. There is also a surprising twist at the end.

Most of the dialogue is sung and I am worried that the mainstream audience in HK may not like it. Hairspray is an example. The music is quite good and the singing (by the actors themselves) is satisfactory indeed, but I personally prefer the music, singing (e.g. Ewan and Nicole) and songs in Moulin Rouge and Chicago. By the way, the dancing parts are enjoyable… I love Johnny dancing with a knife and Helena with a tool used to make pies. Are they a perfect match? ^^

There is tons of blood in this movie and this may be the bloodiest musical you have ever seen. The red blood in the movie looks sharp, compared with the white faces, grey sky, dimly lit alleys and dark clothes. The setting symbolizes the ruthless cruelty of the society. Only the scenes showing Helena’s imagination and the little boy showing his concern to Helena were brightened up.

I can smell the corpses. Can you? Be prepared for this bloody musical and cut your hair before watching it! Happy Lunar New Year!!! ^^ 4 / 5
