Daniel Day Lewis delivers a flawless and convincing performance in There will be Blood, acting as a man blinded by desire for black oil is gradually transformed into a “blood-drinking evil-like object” who despises love. The film also talks about the hypocrisy of religion. This 158-minute movie with disturbing music, lifeless setting, an excellent cast and scenes of tension will reward patient viewers. 3.5 / 5
Plainview: There are times when I look at people and I see nothing worth liking. I just want to earn enough money to get away from everyone… I see the worst in people.
Plainview: Drainage! Drainage, Eli, you boy. Drained dry. I'm so sorry. Here, if you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw. There it is, that's a straw, you see? Watch it. And my straw reaches across the room and starts to drink your milkshake, I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!
JUMP JUMP JUMP and you can JUMP to another place in Jumper. It reminds me of a Japanese cartoon, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, in which the girl can jump to the past. Quite similar!!! BUT obviously, this movie is a science fiction thriller.
In the first 5 mins of the film, we know that the lead has this ability to JUMP to another place. AND soon you will know that someone is trying to kill these people with this special power because the secret organization is worried that the jumpers may use this power to do evil things. The ending will explain why his mum left him when he was only 5 years old. The message of the film is that we should not always choose to escape from our problems. Instead, we should face them... The message is obviously not the focus of the film which is mainly an exciting roller coaster ride.
The audience should remember two rules. 1) You can jump anywhere that you can currently see; and 2) You can jump anywhere that you've seen before, even in a photograph, so long as you have a strong visual memory of it.
I also love Hayden Christensen (Star War) and Jamie Bell (Hallem Foe & Billy Elliot). They also have great potential. Samuel L. Jackson (1408) is as usual charismatic. It is a big surprise that the film stars AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia), but it is a pity that she only appears in the first 15 mins. The only disappointment is that the female lead is not beautiful.
The film is entertaining and fun. You don’t need to think much when you leave the theatre. A relaxing and exciting film during the Lunar New Year Holidays. By the way, the "is that all" ending implies that there will be a sequel. 3.5 / 5
P.S. I would like to add one more point that I did not mention in the radio show. David Rice has the special power, but he does not use it to help the people who are in need (i.e. those who are in danger on TV). Instead he only uses it to travel around the world, get money from the bank and save the woman he loves. That’s why I think, in this movie, both the jumper, David Rice, who gets money from the bank, and those in Paladins who kill jumpers are neither very good nor very bad. I'm just worried that some people, after seeing it, may think David Rice is a GOOD person / hero (in his GF's eyes)... I think he is not evil, but he did commit a crime and was NOT arrested by the police. I understand that the director emphasizes that "there are always consequences" , but it seems that David Rice does not have a personal growth at the end and he is not arrested for stealing money from the bank. Unlike Peter Parker (who knows greater power comes greater responsibility because of his uncle's death) in Spiderman, David Rice does not have a big change and learns a lesson at the end. I expect personal growth in the sequel.
