天生不是寶貝 Precious
Precious is a heart-breaking, but ultimately hopeful movie with a gritty description of the bleak inner-city life, lifelike characters and a very strong performance from the cast. While telling the poignant story realistically, the director wittily uses some fantasy pop-up scenes to show Precious uses defense mechanism to stay sound in mind, which not only highlights the importance of hope, but also lessens our unbearable pain. The movie delivers a message that love, education, perseverance and imagination can brighten up our gloomy days. Everyone is unique and precious, whether you are a black person, an AIDS victim or a homosexual. Under no circumstances should we look down upon ourselves. A minor flaw lies in the upbeat ending in which the character's problems seem to be resolved slightly too easily. 4.5 / 5
寡佬飛行日記 Up in the Air
It is a thought-provoking, witty, bittersweet and at times bleak soul searching flight. Is employment everything? Do you feel lonely? What give your life a sense of purpose? This movie prompts us to reflect on the importance of dreams, family, marriage and human connections. It also delivers a message that humans need companions and settling down. Nevertheless, it may seem too easy to convince the groom and the decision made by the company at the end does not make much sense. Anyway, the director's attempt to stay clear of the genre cliches and provide us with surprising twists and food for thought is highly appreciated. 4.5 / 5
守護有心人 The Blind Side
The Blind Side is a heartwarming and funny sport movie with a pleasing cast. The movie reminds us of the importance of family, education and altruistic love. Redefining the concept of a family, it also tells us that love can be unconditional.
Some people may dismiss this movie probably because of its perceived condescending attitude towards black people. However, I agree with a reviewer James Berardinelli that Leigh Anne helps Michael not because of the color of his skin or his potential as an athlete - she does it because she sees another human being suffering and reaches out to him.
Although the film may sound syrupy, sugar coated and squeaky clean, and Leigh Ann's altruistic motive for adopting Big Mike can be further developed, I still recommend this feel-good and uplifting movie based on a true story to movie lovers. 4 / 5
華麗后台 Nine
Nine is a well choreographed and beautifully shot musical with a star-studded and charismatic cast in which Marion Cotillard steals the show. However, the songs are not as catchy as those in Chicago or Moulin Rouge. Besides, there are too many characters who are rather paper-thin and as a result the man's story becomes less engaging. 3.5 / 5
